Why I Prefer Big Sites Rather Than Multiple Mini Sites

Read any affiliate forum and you will find a discussion on what type of sites are best. I’m pretty sure the debate on a big site versus multiple mini sites will drag on for many years as there is not a clear black and white answer. For me though I will always favour a big site.

From my experience mini sites can be hit or miss perhaps more so since Google introduced its May Day algo update. Those building thin affiliate sites are experiencing vastly reduced traffic than expected. In a recent video Matt Cutts stated that Google has indeed changed its algorithm in regards to long tail search phrases. From my network I’m seeing increased long tail searches for my big authority sites whilst some of my thin affiliate sites have indeed been hit. Google simply loves big sites! I have a few authority sites that Google will index and rank new pages within minutes. I can even rank pages from my authority sites for semi competitive phrases with just internal links. I believe the power of big sites has never been stronger whilst the power of thin exact match domain sites is decreasing virtually every month.

On the flip side of this argument, I do still think in some cases mini sites can be a great asset. For key phrases that are not competitive, if you know how to give new sites decent authority links these sorts of sites can rank and start generating profit quickly. There is no doubt though that a 1000 page site has far more power than 10, 100 page mini sites, although I realise many will disagree. You can though check this out for yourself. Use Google to search for semi competitive key phrases then check the links of big portals that rank highly for these phrases. You will be amazed to find many big sites ranking for these phrases from internal links alone, in many cases outranking exact match domains.
